This is an epic story of two cultures and two religions engaged in a struggle over one land. When Pope Urban II announced the First Crusade in 1095, he galvanized a generation and invented a powerful new ideology -- military aggression as an expression of the ideals of Christianity. For the next 200 years, wave upon wave of Christian warriors from Europe fought their way to the Holy Land, intent on taking it back from Arab occupiers. Few historical events are as evocative or as poorly understood as the Crusades. It was a clash of arms and religion that would irreparably divide East from West - a division that remains to this day. In this short series, we'll take the viewer on a journey back in time to the Middle Ages to understand these holy wars, experience the life and times of the Crusaders, and meet the compelling characters that led and fought in both armies.
